Early signs that may indicate Dyslexia

Children develop at different rates and their literacy development can be affected by external factors such as glue ear or frequent absences from school.

However, listed below are some of the early indicators for dyslexia":

  • family history of literacy difficulties

  • struggles with learning the alphabet

  • late talker/unclear speech

  • difficulty in playing sound games such as ‘I spy’

  • behind their peer group in reading

  • slow reading due to sounding out words

  • reluctance to read and write

  • reading falling behind as they are expected to read more challenging books

  • difficulty with spelling, sometimes even with words they frequently spell

  • high quality intervention

  • no co-occuring learning difficulties

  • stimulating learning environment

  • good language skills
