Dyslexia Screener
Reasons to choose a screener:
Your child is under 8 years. It is usually recommended to wait until around age 8 before carrying out a formal assessment for dyslexia due to the differing rates of development of reading and writing skills in young children.
Screeners provide a rapid first look at literacy difficulties which can guide early support. Numerous studies have demonstrated that early identification of learning difficulties leads to significantly better educational outcomes. Early intervention ensures that pupils are less likely to fall behind and more likely to keep feeling confident about learning. Instead of struggling and losing self-belief, they get the chance to make steady progress and feel proud of their achievements.
Whilst a screener can not diagnose dyslexia, it can distinguish between typical reading struggles and signs of dyslexia. A Dyslexia Index of five levels indicates the level of probability that your child has dyslexia.
A screener helps determine whether further testing is warranted.
The screening process:
Pre-screening
You will receive a short online questionnaire by email. This collects background information, including family history of reading difficulties, motivation, and any early speech or language challenges.
Screening
The screening takes between 40 and 60 minutes.
Your child will need to bring reading glasses or coloured overlays if these are required.
The short tests assess reading, spelling, phonic skills, processing speed, phonological skills, short term memory and writing.
Post screening
You will receive a report by email (password encrypted) which includes:
Your screener results which indicating the level of probability that your child has dyslexia
A score profile highlighting areas of difficulty (based on your questionnaire)
Personalised recommendations tailored to your profile
A follow up phone call to discuss the findings.
The fee is £100, payable at booking.
If you choose to go ahead with a full assessment later, the screening fee will be deducted from the total cost.
